Learning Objectives
Use of qualitative systematic analysis on cations, anions and organic functional groups for the identification of Substances with pharmacological and toxicological relevance from the Official pharmacopoeia. Theorical Principles and applications of instrumental analytical methods.
Program
Charateristics and General Schemes for organic and inorganic analysis. Purity, Methods for sepration and purification of substances. Organoleptic Exame, solubility testing, pH, melting point, boiling point, relationship between structure and chemical physical properties. Practical Execution of Anlysis. Elemental Analysis. Structural Analysis through the chemical properties of functional groups and their derivatives. How to use the Official pharmacopoeia and the chemical database online. General principles and applications of Chromatography, Spectrophotometry, IR and UV/Vis, polarimetry and NMR. Analytical use of Density, Refractive index and molecular weight.
Bridging Courses
In order to subscribe to the final exame, the student should have passed Organic Chemistry and Drug Analysis I (the student should also aquire the attendance to the practical Lab)
In order to be admitted to the Lab, the student should have passed General and Inorganic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, the student should also aquire the attendance to the practical Lab of Drug Analysis I
Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)
- Learning of traditional qualitative analytical techniques in organic / inorganic chemistry; ability to understand the most recent instrumental techniques of organic qualitative analysis applied to substances belonging to the Official Pharmacopoeia.
- Ability to apply instrumental and traditional qualitative analytical techniques for the analysis of unknown compounds belonging to the Official Pharmacopoeia.
- Acquisition of judgment skills to undertake analysis of unknown substances (Official Pharmacopoeia) independently and efficiently.
- Development of communication skills suitable for the presentation of data collected during the analysis of unknown substances. Ability to report the results in an analytical and synthetic way.
- The student at the end of the course will have a good autonomy both for carrying out qualitative analyzes of organic / inorganic unknown substances and for the continuous updating of their knowledge through the study of scientific literature, databases and more generally from the WWW.
Teaching Material
The teaching material prepared by the lecturer in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the lecturer specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it
Teaching, Attendance, Course Books and Assessment
- Teaching
Theoretical lectures, theoretical-practical lessons in the laboratory, individual exercises of the students in the laboratory.
- Attendance
In order to acquire the attendance signature, it is necessary to attend all laboratory exercises. Attendance during the first week of lessons is mandatory.
- Course books
Suggested Books:
Analisi Farmaceutica Qualitativa
Carta - Mamolo - Novelli - Piras
Casa Editrice Edises"Analisi Chimico Farmaceutica"
Savelli - Bruno
Casa Editrice Piccin
- Assessment
Practical exam: using the methological analysis studied during the lab for the identification of 2 different organometallic and organic substances.
Written exame: 4 questions (2 exercises, solubilty and Staudinger Separation) and 2 general questions on the program.
Oral exame: general and specific questions on the program.
- Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)
Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.
To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
