Learning Objectives
The course aims to show the potential offered by GIS systems in organizing and managing research, design and restoration work in the field of cultural heritage.
GIS technology already applied in disciplinary fields such as archaeology and museums has revealed, on the one hand, its extraordinary potential as an information management tool and, on the other, the relative difficulty in spreading its use in conservation practice. Therefore, in this course we want to delve deeper into all those applications that can support restoration even if they are still little applied.
In particular, GIS will be used to:
1) the study of the deformations of the painted tables using specific tools such as Contour, Slope and Aspect
2) the transformation of raster images in RGB format into vector layers and related databases to proceed with a virtual restoration
3) Documentation of all operations carried out during the restoration through specific geodatabases
Program
01 - Information and Information System (hours: 1)
02 - Territorial and spatial information on cultural heritage. With particular reference to canvases and tables, georeferencing problems via C.P. (hours: 2)
03 - The Territorial or Spatial Information System and Databases (Attribute tables (hours: 1)
04 - The sources of Territorial Information on Cultural Heritage, surveys via Laser Scanner or Photomodeling (hours: 1)
05 - Representation and Potential of Spatial Information linked to Restoration problems (Damage, Gaps etc. (hours: 1)
06 - The representation of the real world in a specific GIS for the restoration intervention (hours: 2)
07 - Vector geometric primitives and acquisition from wrl or dxf (hours: 1)
08 - Topology in the representation of the graphic bases of paintings on canvas or wood (hours: 1)
09 - Raster modeling and use of orthophotos of canvases and boards (hours: 2)
10 – GIS and management of vector returns from processing of RGB rster or single bands (hours: 1)
11 - Acquisition of spatial data from thermographic surveys, laser scanners and their visualization through the attribute table. (hours: 1)
12 - Query and display of TIN models and visualization of altimetric profiles of canvas and table surveys (hours: 1)
13 – Connection between database and GIS with the use of data from the restoration laboratory. With exercises. (hours: 2)
14 – The relational database. Data export and redundancy issues. (hours: 1)
15 – Use of the Editor for the graphic rendering of paintings on canvases and other supports (paper or fresco) (hours: 2)
16 – Calculation of spatial coordinates, areas or perimeters of the patches using calculate geometry (hours: 2)
17 – Analysis of class distribution based on patch type and size using Patch analyst (hours: 1)
18 – Use of the Spatial Analyst for modeling and surveying canvases and boards starting from rectified rasters (hours: 2)
19 - Use of 3D Analyst for modeling and surveying canvases and boards starting from rectified rasters (hours: 3)
20 - 3D modeling using graphic bases, plans and elevations managed via ESRI ArcMap (hours: 2)
21 - 3D modeling using ArcScene for the georeferenced positioning of graphic bases, plans and elevations (hours: 5)
22 - Using the Model Builder
23 – Using Map Algebra
24 – GIS project development and Metadata insertion
Bridging Courses
There are no preparatory courses; it is recommended to have passed:
Drawing 1
Drawing 2
Informatics
Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)
-the student must acquire a good ability to use dedicated software and be able to independently develop a project on the
type of exercises carried out in the classroom.
- the student must be able to prepare a report in electronic format (*.docx, *.pdf; *.pptx) with which to communicate the results obtained from the
development of the elaborate project.
- during the oral test the student will have to explain, in appropriate language, the progress of the project and the results achieved.
Teaching Material
The teaching material prepared by the lecturer in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the lecturer specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it
Teaching, Attendance, Course Books and Assessment
- Teaching
Lectures and classroom exercises.
- Attendance
Attendance of lessons is recommended
- Course books
-Alessandro Seravalli “Gis Teorie e Applicazioni” Editrice La Mandragora - 2011
- Material provided by the teacher during the course.
- Assessment
Oral exam which includes:
Presentation of a project based on GIS developed by the student independently and presented by the student also making use of audiovisual material, with insights into particular tools used.
In-depth questions on the program carried out.
- Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)
Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.
To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
Additional Information for Non-Attending Students
- Teaching
Practical exercises to be carried out independently according to the material provided to be viewed by the teacher
- Attendance
Contact the teacher to agree on exercises and study material to use.
