Learning Objectives

The course aims to provide an introduction to the history of tourism suitable for people who will work in the tourism sector and functional for developing a conscious, balanced and sustainable tourism offer.

Program

The course is divided into two parts.

I - In the first part

1) the definition of tourism from its emergence to the present will be discussed;

2) the emergence and development of travel for the purposes of knowledge and recreation will be analysed, with a particular focus on the period from the 18th century to the present;

3) the interventions to stimulate the influx of tourists, the impact of such influx and its risks  will be discussed from a historical perspective.

II - The second part of the course will discuss historical graffiti, some of which were the work of tourists. Nowadays historical graffiti are increasingly considered a cultural heritage that can be of interest for tourists.

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

By the end of the course, students are expected to have acquired the following skills and knowledge:  

1) Knowledge and comprehension skills:
- Awareness of the historical and problematic nature of the notion of tourism;

- knowledge of the main features and  tourning points in the history of tourism, particularly as regards the period from the 18th century to the present day;

- general knowledge of the phenomenon of historical graffiti and the connections of some graffiti with travels.

2) Applied knowledge and understanding

- Knowledge and awareness of the interventions to increase the influx of tourists, the impact of this influx and the risks that it involves.

3) Autonomy of judgement

Students must be able, using the knowledge and comprehension skills referred to in points 1 and 2, to express  critical judgements on the topics covered in the course, even if not specifically dealt with.

4) Communication skills

- Students are expected to know the concepts and language specific to the discipline and to be able to use them correctly.

5) Learning skills

- Students should be able to find bibliography and information on the topics covered in the course.
