Learning Objectives

The students will reach level C1 of the European Framework, and learn the basics of translation through contrastive analysis of the grammar and characteristics of the Italian and English languages. Students will also learn the difference between high-context (e.g. Italian) and low-context (e.g. English) languages, and learn to adjust their communication styles to create clear and effective texts.

Program

The classes will be held in workshop style, with students doing a long series of guided translations, analysing the differences in grammar and syntax between the 2 languages, learning new vocabulary and translation skills and the differences between high and low-context languages.  They will learn basic translation theory and skills and do contrastive grammar exercises and translations of both business and current events texts.   These translations on business and social themes will need to be fone at home, then discussed  and analyzed in detail in the classroom.

Each student will need to bring the translation work done throughut the year to the oral exam, to be used during the conversation regarding their work and what they have learned.  Each translation should have AT least two drafts, with the final draft showing their text analysis, the editing  process and and corrections made.

The teaching material prepared by the language assistant in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the language assistant specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it
