Learning Objectives
The course will focus on data analysis in the field of survey research. The first part of the course will provide the main methodological coordinates of survey research, the second (larger) part will be a data lab on data analysis with STATA in the field of survey research.
Program
The theoretical part will cover the following aspects:
- quantitative research and survey research;
- sampling designs;
- questionnaire design: asking good questions
- variable types
- the logic of causal order
- hypotheses and operationalizing complex questions
- International surveys
The Data Lab will introduce the students to quantitative data analysis with statistical software, covering the following themes:
1. data, data matrix, data file;
2. how to prepare a data-set (cleaning data, giving labels to variables and values, etc.);
3. working with variables (recoding, selecting cases, etc.);
4. analysing variables: descriptive univariate and bivariate statistics (frequencies, means, compare means, cross tabulation, etc.);
5. introduction to data visualisation;
6. hints of multivariate data analysis.
Teaching Material
The teaching material prepared by the lecturer in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the lecturer specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it
Teaching, Attendance, Course Books and Assessment
- Innovative teaching methods
- Course books
Corbetta, P., Social Research. Theory, Methods and Techniques, Sage, 2003.
Further readings will be communicated before the first class.
- Assessment
Final project report based on research questions and dataset provided by the instructors
- Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)
Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.
To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
