Learning Objectives
The course will provide the molecular basis of diseases that most frequently affect the adult population of the industrialized societies . It will also provide guidance regarding prevention of such diseases through appropriate physical activity and healthy nutrition.The course provides the notions and terms necessary to interact with different professional figures working in the healthcare field
Program
The course will address the following topics in the order below.
Definition of homeostasis
Etiological agents
Mechanisms of cellular damage. Cell death: apoptosis and necrosis.
Innate immunity: cells, receptors and mechanisms of action.
Inflammation
Acquired immunity: lymphocytes and cellular basis of adaptive immunity, B cells and antibodies, MHC proteins, cytotoxic T lymphocytes and helper T lymphocytes
Relations between metabolic organs in various nutritional and hormonal states .
Diabetes mellitus: diabetes type 1 and 2; Insulin: structure, function and mechanism of action; molecular mechanisms of insulin resistance.
Obesity and energetic homeostasis. Adipokines
Metaflammation
Synthesis, structure and function of lipoproteins
Atherosclerosis as chronic inflammatory response
Cancer: molecular basis of the behavior of neoplastic cells. Oncoprotective role of physical exercise
Intestinal microbiota in health and oncology
Anti-inflammatory role of physical exercise and diet

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)
Knowledge and understanding. The student must demonstrate that the basic knowledge regarding the defense mechanisms adopted by the human organism in response to various harmful stimuli are acquired. The student must demonstrate to have understood the molecular mechanisms underlying the establishment of metabolic diseases such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome and atherosclerosis, as well as tumors.
Applied knowledge and understanding. The student must demonstrate an understanding of the concepts and the ability to transfer the acquired concepts into the practical activity
Making judgements. The student must demonstrate the ability to use knowledge and concepts in the planning of personalized programs of functional re-education considering the characteristics and clinical condition of the patient.
Communication skills. The student must show the possession of the communication skills, using the correct terminology and must be able to interface with other professional figures operating in the health sector
Learning skills. The student must be able to build his path of scientific growth in a critical and autonomous way, being able to correctly use the study material recommended by the teacher as well as the in-depth material that he can procure himself. These skills will be stimulated by the teacher who will propose insights on topics of interest

- Assessment
The assessment of learning includes an oral exam in which the student will have to answer 3 open questions. The evaluation will be formulated according to the following criteria:
less than 18: skill level not enough
18-20: skill level enough
21-23: skill level satisfactory
24-26: skill level good
27-29: skill level very good •
30-30 with honors: skill level excellent
- Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)
Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.
To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
