Learning Objectives

The course aims to illustrate the technical-scientific fundamentals on the recovery of (material and energy) resourses from (municipal and special) waste. The course is properly organized in the perspective of the environmental, geological and territorial implementation of the sustainable and circular economy and the mitigation and adaptation to the climate change.

Program

· Sustainability, UN SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals), circular economy, sustainable use of resources, primary and secondary raw materials.

· Integrated, sustainable, and circular waste management: definitions and typologies (residential, commercial and institutional, industrial, agricultural waste), compositional analysis, characterization (approaches and methods), generation, EU and IT strategies and regulations.

· Prevention and preparing for reuse of waste.

· Material recovery from waste: separate collection (systems and organization), mechanical treatment (unit processes), composting of biomass and organic waste, recycling of paper/cardboard, plastic, glass, metals, and waste electric and electronical equipment, urban mining.

· Energy recovery from waste: biomethane (by anaerobic digestion) and other biofuels from biomass and organic waste, biochemical methane potential tests at lab-scale, thermal treatments (incineration, pyrolysis, and gasification), solid fuels from waste.

· Management of unsorted residual municipal waste: mechanical-biological treatment (biostabilization and biodrying).

· Landfilling in the integrated management of waste: concepts and challenges, design, construction and operation, landfill gas (generation, collection, and energy recovery), landfill leachate (water balance in a landfill, leachate collection and management), monitoring of landfill gas diffuse emissions with the accumulation chamber method, biocovers to mitigate methane and VOCs diffuse emissions, landfill mining. 

· Management and recovery of construction and demolition waste.

· Challenges of waste management and climate change mitigation and adaptation.

Teaching Material

The teaching material prepared by the lecturer in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the lecturer specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it

Supporting Activities

Possible thematic seminars from outside speakers. Possible technical visits to representative plants for waste management.

Assessment

The assessment of learning requires an oral test to verify the student's preparation to address thematic issues regarding the material and/or energy recovery from diversified tipologies of waste.

The assessment will be articulated according to the following criteria: knowledge of the concepts; knowledge of techniques and procedures; application of techniques and procedures; mastery of the specific language; critical exercise. On each of these criteria the evaluation may be insufficient, sufficient, good or excellent.

Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)

Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.

To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
