Learning Objectives
The aim of the course is helping the students to understand and translate English texts, as well as providing them with adequate knowledge in the field of translation studies. At the end, the students will be expected to be able to translate adequately, and to defend their choices in up-to-date terminology and with the appropriate references to the existing secondary literature, as well as with excellent linguistic skill (oral & written).
Program
The course is about journalistic and multimedia translation. It will alternate between practice and theory, with the professor guiding the students' reflection on their own activity. The interrelated topics and activities will be articulated as follows:
1) General discussion of translation studies, past and present. Practical exercises to fix the theoretical concepts.
2) Translating articles, essays and non-fictional writing, particularly in the field of economics and finance; discussion of functional theories of translation.
3) Exercises in "constrained" translation; discussion of constrained translation theory.
4) Translating multimedial objects; discussion of related translation theories.
Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)
Knowledge and understanding: at the end of the course, the students will be required to show extensive knowledge in the field of translation studies, and must be able to analyze all the textual genres listed above in translational terms.
Applying knowledge and understanding: the students must acquire translating abilities and an awareness of the mental workings of a translator's mind. They must also be able to apply translation theory to their own practice.
Making judgements: the students must acquire the ability to make decisions on the best hermeneutic and linguistic strategies for each genre they have to deal with. Furthermore, they have to be able to evaluate the theoretical consequences of their own work.
Communication skills: at the end of the course, the students must be able to translate all the textual genres discussed in class, as well as to discuss terminological and theoretical questions on the subject of translation.

Teaching techniques include:

Teaching in its traditional forms will be enriched by individual and group exercises and in-depth analyses, conducted by the students by means of the uniurb Moodle platform. Some themes will be treated in "flipped classroom" mode.

- Assessment
The attending students will be assessed weekly. The final mark will be based on translating competence and theoretical knowledge, as well as a capacity to join the two planes - and on the student's active participation in the course. In practice, the students will be asked to show theoretical knowledge in the field of translation studies and practical translating abilities; they will be asked to apply these theoretical notions to their own and other people's translations; they will have to make independent judgements in their translational choices; and will be expected to show good command of both Italian (translation) and English (theoretical discussion).
- Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)
Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.
To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.

Written test (English-Italian translation plus theoretical question in English). Dictionaries are allowed. Final assessment based on translating abilities and theoretical knowledge, as well as on the student's capacity to join the two planes. In practice, the students will be asked to show theoretical knowledge in the field of translation studies and practical translating abilities; they will be asked to apply these theoretical notions to their own and translation; they will have to make independent judgements in their translational choices; and will be expected to show good command of both Italian (the translation itself) and English (theoretical part).
