Learning Objectives
Pragmatic competences in the teaching of German as a Foreign Language
At least since the communicative turn in language teaching methodology learning programmes focus on the use of language as performing an action. Those approaches refer to the concepts and methods of linguistic paragmatics. The course intends to introduce and discuss these concepts and then try to analyse how they are and can be applied in text books and learning programmes.

1. Pragmatics: an overview: Language and context
2. Pragmatics and the teaching of Germn as a Foreign language: The communicative approache and the Common European Framework.
3. Routine formulae
4. Addressing and greeting
5. Speech acts in language programmes
6. Politeness in language programmes
7. Deixis
8. Hidden meaning: The art of reading between the lines.
