Learning Objectives

Upon completion of the coursework, the student acquires knowledge and skills related to basic organic chemistry.
Specifically, the student is able to:
1. know the basic functional groups and apply knowledge to the classification of simple organic molecules (knowledge and ability
understanding; ability to apply knowledge and understanding);
2. know, understand and use structural representations of simple organic molecules and know how to visualize them in three-dimensional space including with the help of molecular models (knowledge and ability to understand; ability to apply knowledge and understanding);
3. know and understand the basic chemical-physical principles underlying the study of organic compounds (chemical equilibria, reaction diagrams, acid-base concept, nucleophilicity-electrophilicity concept) (knowledge and ability to understand);
4. know, understand and be able to predict the relationship between the molecular structure of simple organic compounds (with particular
reference to functional groups detailed in the contents) and their physical properties, particularly the solubility of molecules in aqueous and nonaqueous solvents, and apply this knowledge through the performance of exercises;

Program

Origin and development of organic chemistry as a science. Generalities on the main functional groups of organic compounds. The carbon atom as the central element in organic chemistry: electronic configuration, hybridization of orbitals, calculation of the oxidation state within a molecule, valence, electronegativity. Classification of major classes of organic compounds according to functional groups and increasing oxidation state of carbon. Carbon radical, carbocatione, carbanion.

Configurational and conformational isomeria. Conformational analysis of linear alkanes and cycloalkanes with special reference to mono- or multi-substituted cyclohexanes. Representation of zigzag, trestle, pseudo-cyclic, Fischer, Newman projections along bond axes of molecules. Constitutional isomeria and stereoisomeria. Chirality of organic molecules, enantiomers, diastereoisomers, compounds with two or more stereocenters, R and S descriptors, meso compounds, geometric isomery. Hints on racemate separation methods. Significance of chirality in the biological world and in drugs (hint).

Recall of the concepts of chemical equilibrium, equilibrium constants and relationship to change in reaction free energy. Rate of reaction. Activation energy. Kinetic control and thermodynamic control of organic reactions. Notes on catalysis.
Reaction mechanisms and use of curved arrows for their representation. Resonance limit structures in organic compounds. Representations of radical reactions and ionic reactions.
Nucleophiles and electrophiles: definition, classification, examples and factors affecting their reactivity.

Organic compounds as acids and bases. Bronsted-Lowry and Lewis definitions. Acid-base equilibria, pKa, position of equilibria, pH dependence. Factors affecting basicity and acidity.
Classification of major solvents used in organic chemistry. Relationship between molecular structure and solubility in aqueous and nonaqueous, protic and aprotic, polar and apolar solvents.
Radical halogenation reaction of alkanes; regioselective aspects (hint).
Organometallic compounds, Grignard reagents (hint).
Double and triple carbon-carbon bond electrophilic addition reactions: mechanisms, regioselectivity, and stereospecificity.
Specific aliphatic part. Structure, nomenclature, natural sources, physical properties, reactivity, methods of synthesis of: alkanes, cycloalkanes, alkenes.

Upon completion of this training activity, the student should demonstrate the ability to:
1) know in a basilkare way the structure-property-reactivity relationships of the main families of organic compounds;

3) know the physicochemical properties of organic molecules to familiarize themselves with compounds often used in the laboratory;
4) to know the centrality of organic chemistry at the interface with biochemistry and medicinal chemistry;

D2 - ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING.
Upon completion of this training activity, the student should demonstrate the ability to:
1) describe the fonadamental reaction mechanisms in organic molecules;
2) classify organic transformations on the basis of the interactions between the different functional groups present in an organic molecule;
3) describe the most functional recognition reactions of major functional groups;

D3 - AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT:
Upon completion of this educational activity, the student should demonstrate:
1) ability to apply acquired knowledge and understanding of reaction mechanisms to solve organic chemistry problems;
2) compare spectroscopic data in order to determine the structures of unknown organic compounds;

3) gain awareness of the importance of organic chemistry in the study of drugs and in chemistry involving living things in general. Connect the topics covered with related chemical disciplines.

Upon completion of the course, students should demonstrate the ability to clearly describe the use of the various concepts learned in the course of the coursework.

Teaching

The course is divided into face-to-face lectures of both theoretical and practical nature in an in-person mode. Specifically, the lecturer conducts the lecture in the classroom with the help of computer materials (Powerpoint slides) and blackboard (PC-connected graphic board or slate board). The slides of each lecture are gradually uploaded to the course's Moodle portal.  Alongside the theoretical lectures, there are exercise lectures (performance of exercises by the lecturer in the classroom with student involvement) to enable the learner to: (1) apply theoretical knowledge to practical problems; (2) check his or her level of understanding on one topic before moving on to the study of the next topic; and (3) acquire a correct method for approaching problem solving.

Attendance

There is no obligation to attend although it is strongly recommended.

Assessment

Verification of learning, which aims to ascertain the acquisition of the expected knowledge and skills, is done through the final examination only, which consists of a written test (or with iterative/mid-term assessments) and an oral test.

A written test is judged sufficient when the student demonstrates that he/she has acquired the basics of nomenclature of simple organic compounds, simple acid-base reactions, the drawing-writing mode of simple molecular structures including conformations and configurations. Honors are awarded in the case of attaining the highest score for each question to which the mastery of specialized language is added. The outcome of the written test is announced through the Esse3 portal within a week from the date of the test itself and in any case before the date of the oral test of the same call.

Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)

Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.

To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
