Learning Objectives
The course aims to improve the ability to write and speak, listen and read scientific English. It will focus specifically on the interpretation of graphs in appropriate language and will further work on understanding scientific texts and oral presentations that pertain to the study of psychology.
The course will focus on:
- use of appropriate language in written and oral interpretation of graphs concerned with relevant research data
- comprehension of written and spoken texts
- enabling students to partake in debates/discussions in English
- learning to avoid common errors, especially of pronunciation.
Program
The course starts on September 24th 2024 with two weekly sessions for a duration of nine weeks. There will be 36 hours in total. Should any sessions be cancelled, they will be made up for in an additional tenth week.

Supporting Activities
Online listening mock listening, accessible to students throughout the course, but remaining available as practice material for the exam. Feedback is given by the computer programme on the blended platform..
Virtual meetings during the Christmas holidays to simulate the oral exams. Students are at liberty to participate and present their arguments. Feedback is given directly.
Further practice takes place in online documents to prepare for the written part of the exam (describing a graph) Feedback is given.
Teaching, Attendance, Course Books and Assessment
- Teaching
Students are required to actively participate in sessions and prepare texts in advance
They will debate in class and are asked to answer open questions on the materials used, both written and listening.
There will be some group work pertaining to language work.

- Assessment
1. Written description of a graph (no more than 100-220 words)
2. Listening comprehension, 10 questions, true/false or multiple choice
3. Oral discussion on a chosen topic and the content of lectures given.
To pass the coures a minimum of 6 correct answers in the listening quiz are necessary, the written and the oral part are subject to the examiners evaluation of pass or fail.
- Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)
Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.
To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
Additional Information for Non-Attending Students
- Teaching
Students are advised to consult materials on the blended platform and partake in exercises online, such as mock listening or graph description practice, as well as speaking practice during the Christmas break.
