Learning Objectives

The BIOTECHNOLOGY LABORATORY I course aims to illustrate the fundamental analytical techniques and methods most relevant to the degree course aims.
The fundamental theoretical and applicative aspects of analytical laboratory practice will be explored in depth, with particular reference to classical methods while introducing modern techniques.

Program

The course is divided into theoretical lessons and practical experiences.

1. Safety rules in the chemistry laboratory: a) General rules.

2. Equipment commonly used in the laboratory: a) Technical and analytical scale; b) glassware; c) vortex; stirring and heating plates; centrifuges, etc.

3. Measurement concept: a) Concepts of precision and accuracy; b) standard deviation; c) qualitative and quantitative analysis; d) validation of the measurement; e) targeted and non-targeted analysis.

4. Weight and volume measurements: a) Use of scales; b) volume measurements using glass and automatic pipettes.

5. The solutions: a) Solution concept; b) concentration of solutions; c) concentrated solution and dilution procedures; d) preparation of some solutions.

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

D1: Knowledge and understanding. The student will have to learn the principles and use of the main analytical techniques available for the qualitative and quantitative determination of analytes. They must also know what the most characteristic and essential substances present in biological tissues are and how they are determined. The student must understand the techniques available for sampling, conservation and qualitative-quantitative analysis of chemical components and how to apply them to real samples.

D2: Ability to apply knowledge and understanding. The student must be able to use the terminology related to analytical chemistry correctly. You will have to master the units of measurement of concentration. They must be able to choose among the sampling, sample treatment, and analysis techniques most appropriate for analyzing biological samples. These skills will be tested through written questions.

D3: Independence of judgment. The student must be able to make the correct decisions on how to address a problem related to the analysis and evaluation of the data obtained.

D4: Communication skills. The student must be able to clearly describe the analytical techniques studied with appropriate terms and appropriate examples.

D5: Learning ability. The student's scientific growth must be critical and autonomous, correctly using the material provided by the teacher and what he finds independently to deepen his study.

Attendance

Admission to the exam is permitted to students who have attended at least 2/3 of the laboratory hours and lectures, as attendance is compulsory. To be able to attend the laboratories, it is mandatory to follow and pass the final test of the General Training Course on Safety for Workers and the Course on Safety in the Chemical and Biological Laboratory.

Assessment

Written exam with a total of 6 open questions on different topics from the entire program.
There is a maximum time of one hour for the exam and a pre-printed form with space for 6 answers.
The evaluation considers various aspects, including the number of correct answers and their quality.

Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.

To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
