Learning Objectives

The main learning objectives are to introduce the students to the study of the main statistical technique to better understanding the management of health and social services. This objectives may be reached through a brief explanation of the basis of descriptive statistic. Furthermore, will be presented some issues concerning the principal measures to assess inequalities in the field of health and social care.

Program

  • Definitions of statistic
  • Fields of application of social statistics;
  • How to carry on a research in the field of social care;
  • The matrix of data and the types of scales; the statistical tables and their classification;
  • The most common graphic representations taken from the teacher's research; some application through softwares Excel an SPSS;
  • Statistical reports and average values; examples drawn from the teacher's research;
  • Mutability, absolute and relative variability; concentration and its measure;
  • Analysis of the relationships between characters: contingency, linear simple correlation, linear simple regression;
  • The evaluation of the performance of social and health services and the measurement of inequalities.

Bridging Courses

Basic knowledge of mathematical principles

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

The course will allow the student to learn to orient themselves and discriminate between the different statistical sources and to identify the most reliable ones. It will also allow the studente to understand the potential and limits of statistical analyzes and the best way to use them, since juggling statistics means being able to read and interpret phenomena correctly and, in short, being fully citizens.

Teaching Material

The teaching material prepared by the lecturer in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the lecturer specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it

Supporting Activities

Slides provided by the professor.
Exercises carried out during the course.

Teaching, Attendance, Course Books and Assessment

Teaching

The course will be divided into lectures, exercises, workshops and seminars, through the illustration of the main research experiences carried out by the teacher and other social statisticians (performance of services, health mobility, the balance of care (BoC) for the elderly and disabled, efficiency and effectiveness of health and social services).

Therefore, in addition to frontal teaching, the student must have the ability to apply statistical techniques in concrete operational contexts, following the research paths undertaken by the teacher.

Attendance

Attendance and contact with the teacher is recommended.

Course books
  • HEALEY J.F. (1996) . Statistics. A tool for social research, WATSWORTH PUBLISHING COMPANY  chapters:( 1,2,3,4,5,13,14,16)
Assessment

The assessment of learning will take place at the end of the course through a written test where descriptive statistics exercises and related to the monographic part will be proposed. The evaluation will take into account the following elements:

  • logic in solving the question;
  • correctness of the statistical procedure;
  • adequacy of the solution;
  • use of correct language;

The satisfaction of these aspects will lead to an evaluation ranging between 18 and 30 cum laude.

Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)

Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.

To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
