Learning Objectives
The course proposes, first of all, a general introduction to the methods, the terminology, the formal and logical tools of mathematics. These are essential instruments for the understanding of the classes dealing with economics, finance and statistics. Another goal of this course consists in gaining practice with exercises in calculus and linear algebra, and how to use this skillness in problem solving in order to study real systems by the methods of mathematical modelling.
Program
Elements of mathematical logic. Elements of set theory. Elementary functions.
Linear algebra: matrices, linear systems of equations.
Calculus: functions of one variable, functions of several variables, differential calculus, integrals, series.
Bridging Courses
It is necessary to have passed the mathematics exam in order to take the exams in:
- Financial Mathematics
- Statistics
- Economic Statistics
Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)
- Knowledge and ability to understand: by the end of the course, students should have acquired knowledge and ability to understand the main parts of the program.
- Applied Knowledge and Ability to Understand: students should be able to apply the mathematical methods described in the program to solving problems and exercises, as well as the ability to translate into the symbols and formalism of mathematics real-world situations, especially in the economic, financial, and social fields, devise simple mathematical or formal models or graphs to illustrate and study relationships among variables.
- Autonomy of judgment: students should have the ability to connect in integrated and unified patterns the knowledge acquired during the course and to confront complex problems through the logical and formal tools made available by mathematics.
- Communication skills: Students should acquire clear and effective communication skills through a good command of vocabulary related to the topics covered during the course.
- Learning skills: Students should have developed good learning skills, enabling them to independently deepen the knowledge acquired during the course by tackling subsequent paths of personalized study.
Teaching Material
The teaching material prepared by the lecturer in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the lecturer specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it
Supporting Activities
There are additional hours of tutorials and supplements carried out by Prof. Silvia Valli
Teaching, Attendance, Course Books and Assessment
- Course books
Tonu Puu "A mathematics refresher for students of economics" file pdf freely available in the blended learning platform.
- Assessment
The examination is divided into a written proof and an oral interview.
The written test consists of the performance of some exercises, and is divided into two parts: the first complende the study even graphing the properties of a function and applications of Taylor's formula for functions of one variable. The second includes series, integrals, classification of critical points for a function of several variables, solution of systems of linear algebraic equations, and algebra of matrices. At least 8 points in the first part and at least 18/30 overall must be obtained to pass the written exam. The oral part of the exam may be taken only by those who have already passed the written (possibly in the same roll call).
The oral part of the exam will ascertain the level of overall preparation on all topics in the program. For a sufficient evaluation, the student will have to show knowledge of concepts (through their definitions) theorems and connections between the various topics, and also some understanding of the demonstrations.
- Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)
Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.
To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
