The aim of the course is helping the students to understand and analyze English storytelling in all its guises, as well as providing them with adequate knowledge in the fields of narratology and stylistics. At the end, the students will be expected to be able to analyze storytelling adequately, and to defend their analyses in up-to-date terminology and with the appropriate references to the existing secondary literature, as well as with excellent linguistic skill (oral & written).

The course is about storytelling. It will alternate between practice and theory, with the professor guiding the students' reflection on their own analyses. The interrelated topics and activities will be articulated as follows:

1) General discussion of contemporary stylistic and narratological theories. Analytical exercises to fix the theoretical concepts.

2) Practical exercises (analyses of textual storytelling).

3) Practical exercises (analyses of oral storytelling).

4) Practical exercises (analyses of multimodal storytelling).

Knowledge and understanding: at the end of the course, the students will be required to show notions in the fields of stylistics and narratology, and must be able to analyze all the storytelling genres listed above.

Applying knowledge and understanding: by the end of the course, the students must be able to analyze all storytelling genres.

Making judgements: the students must acquire the ability to make decisions on the best hermeneutic and linguistic strategies for each genre they have to deal with. Furthermore, they have to be able to evaluate the theoretical consequences of their own work.

Communication skills: at the end of the course, the students must be able to analyze all the genres discussed in class, as well as to discuss terminological and theoretical questions on the subjects of narratology and stylistics.

Assessment

Assessment of oral presentations. The final mark will be based on analytical competence and theoretical knowledge, as well as a capacity to join the two planes - and on the student's active participation in the course. In practice, the students will be asked to show theoretical knowledge in the fields of narratology and stylistics and practical analytical abilities; they will be asked to apply these theoretical notions to all storytelling genres; they will have to make independent judgements in their analytical choices; and will be expected to show good command of English.
