Learning Objectives
Themes
The main objective of the course is to develop students' critical thinking skills with regard to dynamics and practices taking place in social media, observed from an ethical perspective. The focus will therefore be on issues such as digital identity, algorithmic mediation, privacy and networked relationships. Developing these skills produces a greater awareness of the ethical dimension of being online, which is necessary to become responsible digital citizens and for the dissemination of adequate online communication practices.
The course spreads over 4 units, organised through lectures consisting of theoretical approaches, case studies and a final quiz at the end of each lecture. The topics of the units are:
Fundamentals of Digital Ethics (1 hour 30), aimed at understanding the main issues and orientations of digital communication ethics. This first part is structured as follows: (1.1) digital ethics: surveillance and power; (1.2) right to be forgotten; (1.3) digital divide.
Onlife Identity (1 hr. 30), which focuses on the online self-narratives, within the dimension of continuity between life on and off screen. This part is structured as follows: (1.1) virtual and real; (1.2) from the collapse of contexts to selective visibility; (1.3) netiquette
Privacy, Datafication and Algorithms (1 hr. 30), which focuses on the in-depth study of algorithmic mediation and the practices of visibility and self-commodification. This part is structured as follows: (1.1) connected privacy; (1.2) attention economy; (1.3) infoselves.
Ethical Debate (Argumentation and Debate) (1 hr. 30), the last meeting of the course involves Debate activities, during which the participants are divided into two groups that will have to try to discuss one of the topics addressed during the lecture cycle, which will be presented through a case study chosen by the lecturer. The debate helps develop argumentation, listening and public speaking skills, while critical thinking is used to address an ethical dilemma. At the end, the teacher assesses the performance of the teams in terms of skills achieved.
