Learning Objectives

The aim is to organise digital documentation for the conservation of works of art from the Pinacoteca di Siena that are being moved due to the technical adaptation of the exhibition spaces.

The course will provide the basic tools needed to study and understand artworks on wooden supports, such as polychrome wood carvings and paintings on wood, and will teach participants how to recognise the materials and techniques used.

The course will also provide tools for the digital cataloguing and two-dimensional surveying of works. There will also be a more in-depth study of three-dimensional surveying using digital techniques.

Practical lessons will enable students to develop the manual skills necessary for the planned activities.

The course will equip you with the skills needed for digital documentation, handling works and surveying assets in museums, public institutions and private foundations, whether during exhibitions or the setup of exhibition rooms.

The Summer School will take place from 22 September to 3 October 2025. The theoretical preparation days will take place at the University of Urbino, and the practical sessions will take place at the Pinacoteca di Siena.

The course organisers will communicate organisational details regarding logistics to participants at a later date.

The programme covers a range of theoretical topics over two days in Urbino.

  • An overview of digital documentation issues for works of art.
  • Conservation cataloguing of works of art.
  • - Overview of two-dimensional aspects of works of art
  • Surveying technologies
  • Three-dimensional surveying systems
  • Information management for conservation

The technical and practical part of the course will take place at the National Art Gallery of Siena over two weeks in the form of a field workshop.

The final exam will consist of a written report on the laboratory activities carried out.

The course consists of 16 hours of lessons, and participants who complete and present their project work will receive a certificate.

There will be two face-to-face meetings in Urbino at the beginning of the summer school, attended by the directors, co-director, and some lecturers and professionals.

After the workshop in Siena, there will be a final meeting with the directors, co-director and evaluation committee to discuss the project work.

Seminar lessons will be recorded and remain available on the Summer School Moodle page for a limited time.
