Learning Objectives

Identification of chemical compounds of pharmaceutical and toxicological interest belonging to the European Pharmacopoeia (Ph. Eur.) by systematic analysis of cations and anions and of organic functional groups. Gain understanding of theoretical principles and applications of instrumental analytical methods.

Program

Features and general scheme of inorganic and organic analysis. Purity criteria; separation and purification methods. Organoleptic exams; solubility tests, pH, melting point, boiling point. Relationship between these chemical-physical properties and the structure of the molecules. Practical execution in the laboratory. Elemental analysis. Structural analysis through the chemical properties of the functional groups of organic substances. Practical execution in the laboratory. Consultation of the European Pharmacopoeia (Ph. Eur.) and the scientific literature. General principles and applications of chromatography, IR spectrophotometry, UV/Vis, polarimetry and NMR. Analytical use of density, refractive index, molecular weight.

Bridging Courses

General and Inorganic Chemistry

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

-Knowledge of traditional analytical techniques in organic and inorganic chemistry; understanding of more recent instrumental techniques of organic qualitative analysis applied to organic and inorganic substances.

-Applying traditional and instrumental analytical techniques to the determination of unknown compound belonging to the European Pharmacopoeia (Ph. Eur.).

-Acquisition of skills to undertake analysis of unknown substances as independently and efficiently as possible.

-Development of communication skills suited to the presentation of the collected data during the analysis of unknown substances. Ability to report the results in an analytical and synthetic way.

- The student at the end of the course will possess enough understanding and knowledge to perform qualitative analysis of unknown organic and inorganic compound belonging to the European Pharmacopoeia (Ph. Eur.). Moreover the student will be able to continuously updating his background through the study of the scientific literatures, databases and more generally from the WWW.

Teaching, Attendance, Course Books and Assessment

Teaching

Theoretical lectures, theoretical and practical lessons in the laboratory, individual experiences of the students in the lab.

Attendance

To acquire the frequency signature, you must attend all laboratory experiences.
Mandatory the attendance of all lectures during the first week of the course.

Highly recommended to attend lectures of this course and the Organic Chemistry ones.

Assessment

Practical, written and oral exam

(The practical exam is valid for 2 years only)

Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)

Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.

To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
