Learning Objectives
The aim of the course is the analysis of chemical processes in biopharmaceutical field by means of physico-chemical methods, in order to verify their feasibility and optimization and to study the properties and the troubleshooting which involve chemicals, their structure and interactions.
Program
PROCESSES AND REACTIVITY: Energies involved in biopharmaceutical chemical processes determining their feasibility and optimization. The thermodynamics in chemical processes and the need to define thermodynamic functions such as enthalpy, entropy and free energy or chemical potential and the principles that correlate with each other and with the system variables. State of balance and out of balance. Examples of processes in which these principles apply.Systems with single and multi-components, phase equilibria and phase diagrams. Solutions, standard biological balance of the apportionment; extraction and purification, surface tension, surfactants; adsorption.Reaction rate and chemical kinetics. Order and molecularity. Arrhenius equation. Transposed through biological membranes. Homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis and enzyme action.Solid state structure and related properties.
PHYSICO-CHEMICAL METHODS: Principles of quantochimica which are at the basis of the interaction of radiation with matter. Intermolecular forces, interactions and bonds, molecular recognition in biological systems. Spectroscopic techniques: atomic and molecular spectroscopy. Theoretical and experimental basis of UV-Vis, fluorescence, IR and RAMAN and MRIs.

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)
- The student must show the possession of the mastery of basic knowledge about the basic concepts related to physico-chemical investigation techniques and to assess biopharmacological processes.
- The student must show an understanding of the concepts and theories provided by the course; he/she will provide examples of evaluation of simple processes that identify interactions of biomolecules and drugs with use of techniques such as UV-Vis, fluorescence, IR, Raman, and MRIs.
- The student must show the possession of the ability to use knowledge and concepts that allow to reason according to the specific logic of the discipline. Must be able, in particular, to identify methodologies that allow to know the physico-chemical processes that involve drugs and biomolecules.
Teaching Material
The teaching material prepared by the lecturer in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the lecturer specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it
Supporting Activities
Eventual practical exercises will be performed by Dr. Michela Cangiotti and Dr. Alberto Fattori
Teaching, Attendance, Course Books and Assessment
- Teaching
-
lectures and exercises
- Attendance
no
- Course books
-
handouts available on-line
Reference text: Physical Chemistry, Atkins
- Assessment
Oral examination
- Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)
Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.
To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
