Learning Objectives
Knowledge of a writer and his principal work. Study of a literary genre through one of the more representative exemples. Knowledge of the technique of antithesis (and proposal of a general definition of rethorical phenomena); study of his use in a literary work.
Program
The course will study the use of antithesis in the Maximes of La Rochefoucauld. After a brief introduction about antithesis in general, in the context of traditional theories on rhetorics, an analithical catalogue of antithesis in the Maximes will be proposed. After the course the students will write a brief comment in which they will apply the knowledge received on an text of their own choice.
Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)
Knowledge of a period of literary history and notions about a literary genre. Knowledge about the definition of rethorical phenomena, and the use of them in a literary text. Ability to apply the knowledge received to a literary text autonomously chosen. Ability to use the terminology of literary analysis in a written text.
