Learning Objectives
The course will give a general knowledge of nineteenth-century French literature (narrative mainly, but also, more briefly, poetry and poems in prose), through the study of description, a techinque that this century loved and renewed. The course will also study the evolution of this technique.
Program
After a brief introduction about description in eighteenth-century French literature, the course will study many examples of description in French literary texts in the nineteenth century in chronological order. Students will be invited to orally discuss or to write a brief work about a text of their own choice.

General knowledge of a period of literary history, through the study of one of its most peculiar techniques. Ability to use knowledge of literary history to the analysis of literary texts. Ability to study a literary text autonomously chosen. Ability to communicate the results of an autonomous research clearly and orderly.
