Learning Objectives
The main aim of this course is for students to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to develop a critical understanding of Italian history and culture of the last two centuries.
Program
The course is intended to provide a brief portrait of Italy from the dawn of modernity to our days, through a critical survey of the major intellectuals and writers who have devoted themselves to investigating the Italian national identity over time. Readings will include work by Giacomo Leopardi, Antonio Gramsci, Piero Gobetti, Carlo Levi, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Giulio Bollati, Walter Siti and Roberto Saviano, among others, with the purpose to answer the question: who are the Italians?
