Learning Objectives
The purpose of the course is that of giving general historic and critical notions on Italian Literature, on its periodization, and on the principal intellectual instruments for its knowledge. The course intends, in addition, to give adequate metodologies on the relationship between History of Literature e History of Thought, and to give some general notions on Philology. It intends especially to offer a general survey on Italian Literature in the XVIII Century and its main genres in prose and poetry. There will be some systematic deepenings on the culture of the period of Enlightenment and on its protagonists (Parini, Verri, Beccaria), with systematic readings of those texts.
Program
First semestre. The Literature in the XVIII Century in Italy and its relationship with the European Illuminism. Politics, philosophy and literature in the MIlanese culture of the second half of the Century. Beccaria: Dei delitti e delle pene. The works of Alessandro Verri on torture. Manzoni: Storia della colonna infame. Manzoni and the Illuminism in Lombardy. Il giorno of Giuseppe Parini. The idea of the Settecento in contemporary italian literature of the XX Century: Calvino (Il barone rampante), Sciascia (Il consiglio d'Egitto).
Secondo semestre. V. Alfieri as a political thinker (Del principe e delle lettere). Introduction to Parini: the Dialogo sopra la nobiltà. Readings of the Il Giorno. The idea of Enlightenment in the European culture of the last Century. Seminars on the political culture of the ancien regime.
Bridging Courses
The course will be tought by the Porofessor and in addition there will be some lectures given by another professor invited. Some seminars will be offered by other collegues.
Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)
Students are expected to show an adequate mastery of the basic information on the discipline, especially concerning its foundamental elements (textual analysis, knowledge of the contests, periodization, notion on Philology), and the relationship with other disciplines such as History and GHistory of Thought.
Students are expected to show a full comprehension of the main concepts of the course, and a skill in facing their complexity. In addition they are expected to be able to analyze a text of literature (both in prose and in poetry), with a special attention to their relationship with modern culture.
Students are expected to show a complete mastery of Italian language, and especially to be able to apply to the specific field of the critical language, with an adequate knowledge of the sectoral languages, and a skill in expose the subject.

Teaching, Attendance, Course Books and Assessment
- Teaching
Lectures and integrative seminars. The seminars are considered as an integral part of the program.
- Attendance
The students who intend to sit the exam as "frequentanti" are required to attend regularly. In particular, the exam will require the knowledge of everything is tought during the lectures.
- Course books
A dossier of various matters, including criticl contributions, will be at the stdent disposal at the beginning of the course. As a program, the students are expected to prepare the following texts:

- Assessment
Oral exam. The interview will be based on the basic knowledge of the discipline, and on the mastery of analyzing the texts, and also on an adquate mastery in the exposition.
- Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)
Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.
To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
