Learning Objectives

A student should be capable of analyzing the texts from a historical-theoretic point of view, without proposing unfounded hypotheses. A few lectures on meditation may increase her/his mindfulness and insight.

Program

In the Course the category of nonsense will be analyzed, being a central concept in Chan Buddhism. In addition, the possibilities of an alternative logic to the formal one will be examined, in the light of the koans. Topics such as death and individual identity will be dealt with.

A student will be capable of analyzing the texts of Chan Buddhism and of focusing on the historical foundations of this philosophical school of Buddhism. S/he will have to discuss the issues formulated by Chan masters, from a critical point of view.

The teaching material prepared by the lecturer in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the lecturer specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it

Attendance

In order to be considered an attending student, s/he has to attend almost the totality of the lectures. The indicated texts cannot be replaced.

Il libro della tranquillità, edited by L. V. Arena, ebook; L. V. Arena, Introduzione alla storia del Buddhismo Chan, ebook, or H. Nakamura, Ways of Thinking of Eastern Peoples, Honolulu press, 1966 and sqq. (only the sections on China and Japan). Recommended: L. V. Arena, Del nonsense o  il senso della vita, ebook. All ebooks are to be found in the Amazon sites.

Assessment

Oral examination. Disabled students will be examined through multiple-answers tests.

Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)

Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.

To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.

A student should consult the teacher as to every philosophical issues and the pronunciation of the Sanskrit, Chinese, and Japanese words.
