Learning Objectives

General part: know, understand and be able to analyze the concepts and theories of the philosophers of the Renaissance.

Lecture part: understand and acquire knowledge of the philosophy of Étienne de La Boétie, through reading-analysis of his famous pamphlet: The voluntary servitude.

Program

The course aims to analyze a crucial stage of the moral and political debate of the sixteenth century through the monographic study of a classic in the history of Renaissance Philosophy: The voluntary servitude of Étienne de La Boétie.

Upstream of the modern discipline and research practices of authority legitimacy conditions, La Boétie calls into question the very raison d'etre of power, riconducendone the origin senseless act by which many - men, villages, cities - renounce the natural freedom and equality, in the determination to awaken the conscience because they conceal from the yoke of tyranny.
