Learning Objectives

The course is aimed at the acquisition of the principles of discrete time series
analysis and in particular addressed to the geological, stratigraphic and paleoclimatic
 series.
The course also aims to master numerical analysis tools throughout several
practical examples using a standard language for data analysis such as Matlab.

The principles of numerical analysis learned in this course have potential applications
in many other fields and are an important tool for the quantitative analysis . The course will address the following topics from a practical point of view, mainly
 with the help of the computer .

Program

1 Time series in the geologic and paleoclimatic records. · 1.1 Discrete time series . · 1.2 Relationship between time and stratigraphic position .  2 Analysis in the frequency domain · 2.1 Fourier Transform · 2.2 Power Spectrum Analysis and Multi Taper Method · 2.3 Evolutive Spectrum · 3.4 Frequency Filters · 2.5 Signal, noise and confidence limits 3 Analysis in the time domain · 3.1 Autocorrelation · 3.2 Cross - correlation · 3.3 Principal Component Analysis ( PCA ) · 3.4 Filters · 3.5 Wavelets also in connection with the cross-correlation · 3.6 Singular Spectrum Analysis and similarities to the PCA · 3.7 Monte Carlo Methods for CI

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

1.1 · The student must show mastery of basic knowledge of the types of numerical
analysis in the program of the course . · The student must understand of the concepts and theories provided by the course;
be able to independently analyze complex situations choosing the right tools for
specific cases ; be able to use statistical tests to evaluate the significance of the
results. · The student must show the ability to use knowledge and concepts that allow to
reason according to the specific logic of the discipline . He/she must be able , in
particular, to identify appropriate methodologies and to envisage hypotheses of
analysis in non-trivial cases .

Teaching Material

The teaching material prepared by the lecturer in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the lecturer specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it

Teaching, Attendance, Course Books and Assessment

Teaching

Theory lectures and practiacal exercises.

Attendance
Although strongly recommend, the attendance is not compulsory .
Assessment
Oral examination preceded by a written test ( developed at the computer ) . The exam is passed if the grade is at least 18/30 in the written test and the oral test;
the written test is only valid for the exam session in which the written test was taken.
Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)

Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.

To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
