Learning Objectives

The hands-on course aims to introduce students to corpus linguistics and corpus-based translation.

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

Knowledge and understanding: students will learn corpus linguistics theory and will be able to explain corpus linguistics principles.
Applying knowledge and understanding: students will be able to identify and apply corpus linguistics theory to corpus-based translation.
Making judgements: students will be able to analyze and evaluate the strategies and theoretical tenets implemented in corpus-based translation autonomously.
Communication: students will be able to talk about corpus linguistics theory and corpus-based translation using corpus linguistic-specific language effectively.
Lifelong learning skills:  students will be able to learn collaboratively and carry out corpus-based translations in working environments effectively.

The teaching material prepared by the lecturer in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the lecturer specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it

Lectures, pair work, group work, face-to-face and online hands-on tasks, and corpus-based translation practice.

Assessment

Oral exam focusing on the corpus-based translation assigned as a final task. For the exam, students will carry out a corpus-based translation following the guidelines provided by the instructor. Students will be assessed on the basis of the quality of the translation, the degree of efficacy in terms of corpus use, and their ability to reflect on the corpus-based translation process.

Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)

Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.

To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.

Assessment

Oral exam focusing on the reading materials assigned. Students will be assessed on the basis of their knowledge of the theory introduced in the reading materials, their ability to think critically about the topics assigned, and their subject-specific communication skills.

Notes

Only attending students have to study the teaching materials available on Moodle.

Students can request to sit the final exam in English.
