Curriculum: PERCORSO COMUNE
Date Time Classroom / Location

Learning Objectives

The objectives of the course are knowledge of the constituent materials of the cultural heritage, with particular reference to the natural stone materials, artificial stone materials, ceramics and painting materials. Knowledge of the environment and environmental issues. Detailed knowledge of the interaction between environment and materials. Understanding and analysis of the types of alteration and degradation of the different materials. Knowledge of UNI-Normal recommendations. Use and interpretation of non-invasive and micro -invasive diagnostics.

Program

1. Introduction to Chemistry for Cultural Heritage: purposes and approaches on Cultural Heritage.

2. Archaeometry and Conservation Science.
3. Natural stone materials: Sedimentary, metamorphic and magmatic rocks used in art and architecture. Features and processing methods (h.3).
4. Artificial stone materials: lime, chalk, mortar, plaster, stucco (h.3).
5. Ceramic materials: raw materials, technology, ceramic materials classification, and characteristics. Bricks (h.9).
6. Painting materials: organic pigments, inorganic natural and artificial pigments. Chemical and physical properties. Organic binders: characteristics and properties (h.3) .
7. Environmental issues according to the Cultural Heritage: micro and macro-environmental factors. Pollution and particulate (h.1).
8. Alteration and degradation of materials: phenomena and types of alteration and degradation of the materials. Causes and mechanisms of formation (h.2)
9. Standardized methods for knowledge and cultural heritage: UNI, Normal recommendations.
10. Non-invasive diagnostics: IR, IR-FC, XRF, RX, UV (h.3).

12. Bibliography

Bridging Courses

Petrography, Organic and inorganic chemistry, Appliyed petrography.

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

Students will increase a good ability to understand the nature of the constituent materials of the cultural heritage and issues related to their origin

The student will be able to evaluate the conservation problems related to the interaction between materials and environment.

The student will be able to draw up a diagnostic of some artefacts of his choice.

Teaching Material

The teaching material prepared by the lecturer in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the lecturer specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it
