Assigned to the Degree Course

Sanitary Nutritional and Environmental Biology (LM-6)
Curriculum: BIOLOGIA DELLA NUTRIZIONE
Date Time Classroom / Location

Learning Objectives

The course of Bioinorganic has the aim to provide students the main bases of bioinorganic chemistry. It takes into account the role of metal ions within the biologic systems. In the first part of the course the principles of the coordination chemistry will be discussed. Subsequently, the role of transition metal ions into some important biological and nutritional processes will be studied in detail.

Program

01 - Overview of Bioinorganic chemistry (1 hour)
02 - Principles of coordination chemistry related to Bioinorganic chemistry (14 hours)
03- Properties of biological Molecules (2 hours)
04 - Physical methods in Bioinorganic Chemistry (4 hours)
05 - Metal ions in biology (2 hours)
06 - Macroelements and microelements (2 hours)
07 - Mineral salts, uptake, lack and toxicity (2 hours)
08 - Control and utilization of metal-ion concentration in cells (2 hours)
09 - Metal ion folding and cross-linking of biomolecules (2 hours)
10 - Binding of metal ions and complexes to biomolecule-active centers (2 hours)
11 - Electron-transfer proteins (2 hours)
12 - Substrate binding and activation by nonredox mechanisms (2 hours)
13 - Atom- and group-transfer chemistry (2 hours)
14 - Metals in medicine (2 hours)
15 - Magnetic Resonance Imaging, radiodiagnostic agents, etc. (1 hour)

Bridging Courses

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

The student must demonstrate to be able to:

  • Draw and manage chemical formulas of coordination compounds
  • Know metal/ligand selectivity in aqueous solution
  • Use and compare thermodynamic stability constants
  • Know the mechanisms of enzymatic catalysis
  • Identify the role of the metal ion in metalloproteins

Teaching Material

The teaching material prepared by the lecturer in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the lecturer specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it

Supporting Activities

Ppt files and scientific reviews published on international journals will be made available online (moodel platform)

Teaching, Attendance, Course Books and Assessment

Teaching

The course will consist in lecturers

Attendance

Mandatory

Course books

1) "Principles of Bioinorganic Chemistry"; S.J. Lippard, J.M. Berg; University Science Books. 2) "Bioinorganic Chemistry"; I. Bertini, H.B. Gray, S.J. Lippard, J.S. Valentine; University Science Books.

Assessment

Oral examination

Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)

Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.

To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
