Learning Objectives
This course will provide an analysis on the puzzling definition of the terms Chinese “culture” and “tradition” that gave to the Western imaginary the idea of a monolithic and changeless China. We will try to overcome this cliché through the analysis of the intercultural relations (both internal and external) that have characterized and contributed to the Chinese identity formation from the classical to the contemporary times.
Program
Analysis of the terms "culture" and "interculture" applied to the Chinese context. The paradigm of harmony as model of continuity in Classical China. China meets the West: China encounters Buddhism; the Jesuits missions ; China meets Western values. Changing the paradigm: the ideal of "harmonious society" in contemporary China.
