Learning Objectives
The student is provided with a brief summary of the most relevant problems and historical developments of Latin literature, from the origins to II AD. He/she will get acquainted with crucial problems and personalities of Latin literature, and acquire basic methodologies of literary analysis, with a particular focus on comedy and elegy.
Program
The syllabus is twofold:
- general part (PARTE ISTITUZIONALE)
- CORSO MONOGRAFICO
- Its first section is a general part (PARTE ISTITUZIONALE), where the students work independently, improving and consolidating their knowledge of Latin literature (genres, development and personalities) through the perusal of a handbook or companion on the topic.
- The second section (CORSO MONOGRAFICO) is developed by the teacher, who will provide the students with:
- a general survey on the dramatic production in Roman culture, including a history of Latin theatre
- origins, patterns and characteristics of Latin comedy
the authors of the Latin comedy
reading and discussing excerpts from Pseudolus
- general characters, origin and models of Latin elegy
reading and commentary of elegies of Propertius
Bridging Courses
No former knowledge of the topic is required; however, a good knowledge of Roman History is recommended.
Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)
- The student will be asked a good knowledge of the history, problems, authors and themes of Latin literature.
- The student will be asked to prove his capability to employ the specific set of knowledge, theory and logic of the subject. He will read and analyse a literary text in Latin language, and put it in the larger frame of its genre

- Assessment
Assessment 1: written exam (test) - the student will answer to given questions on topics, which he will be acquainted with through the handbook and the lessons. Topics of the questions may cover: periodization and phases of Latin literature; main themes of Latin authors; features of language and style of Latin authors; history of Latin theatre and Latin elegy.
Assessment 2: oral exam - during the oral session, the written exam is discussed and dwelt upon by the examiner, and further questions are asked.
- Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)
Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.
To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.

Notes
All the Latin texts read during classes will be given with the original text and an Italian translation. Documents and materials will be given to the students through a Facebook group, ‘Lineamenti di letteratura latina a.a. 2016-2017’, where all the students will be asked to enlist.
