Learning Objectives

The goal of the course is an introduction to the fundamentals of the modern criminal law and the sovereignty of the state on citizens' health that are developed in Europe since the second half of the eighteenth century. The course aims to reconstruct the conditions and the context of the apparition of the right to punish and the power to care by the modern state as a fundamental prerogatives of sovereignty. This analysis will provide the perspective from which to look at some contemporary transformations concerning changes the semantics of the law and the penal system, prison order and the changes in the organization of health

Program

The program of the course makes use of Michel Foucault studies on the birth of the prison, the genealogy of sexuality and the concept of biopolitics. It is indispensable tools conceptually and historically to frame under what conditions and in what context have appeared and have established themselves in modernity the monopoly of the right to punish and the power to care by the state.

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

The students must demonstrate their proficiency in the methodology and the content of a teaching of the third year of the degree course curriculum in political science, economics and government. The student will be able to link the elements and purely conceptual issues to the analysis of some problems concerning the history of criminal law and the evolution of health systems in modernity. The preparation must be founded on a wealth of background knowledge about the penalty concept in modern history, the power of healing and training of the health system's features, its social impact and its politica role. The student must show that he acquired linguistic competence and appropriate lexical with the argument; have assimilated some essential elements of technical terminology and learn the fundamental .bibliography on the argument. The student  will also gather information independently, as much as possible, on individual aspects of the program and on topics of personal interest. The student must be able to use the tools of analysis and interpretation acquired for understanding some specific areas (the history of the prison system, and the evolution of criminology; the medical intervention models in the late eighteenth century and the twentieth century; the concept of bio-politics).

Assessment

Oral examination.

The oral exam allows the student to organize a light show, fair by terminology views and possibly deepen the individual aspects of the program that have aroused his attention.

Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)

Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.

To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
