Learning Objectives
The course aimes at giving the students the basic theoretical knowledge and pratical skills that will enable them to analyse the conservation's state and the decay's cause of the ground and paint layers on a wooden work of art. Even more, students will be able to know materials and manage traditional and modern methods used for layers adhesion and consolidation processes.
Program
1.01 - GROUND LAYERS (4 hrs)
Components: charges and binders
Decay causes:
- phisical decay
- chemical decay
- microbiological decay
- human behavior decay
1.02 - PAINT LAYERS (6 hrs)
- Components: pigments and binders
- Decay causes/ mechanisms:
- phisical decay
- chemical decay
- microbiological decay
- human behavior decay
1.03- CONSOLIDANTS AND ADHESIVES (25hrs)
- The use of consolidants
- Consolidants features and choice of the most appropriate
- Consolidant's properties after their application
- The use of adhesives
- Consolidants features and choice of the most appropriate
- Natural and synthetic resins
- Glues
2-Pratical segment: laboratory activities
Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)
- Acquiring the necessary knoledge in order to determine the decay mechanisms of wooden sculptures' ground and paint layers, wooden furnitures and panel paintings
- Acquiring the necessary skills to determine the ground and paint layers conservation features
- Acquiring the necessary skills to identify and choose the suitable consolidants and adesives needed by the work of art

- Assessment
The final test will include the presentation of a written report regarding the conservation work performed during the course.
Moreover, the final test will consist of a written test with multiple choice answers, plus questions with free answers, and an oral examinations with questions on the topics addressed during the course.
- Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)
Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.
To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
