Learning Objectives
This course will analyze the role of exercise in therapeutic intervention, to improve the health and the rehabilitation of the subject. They will consider both the benefits of proper exercise is the exercise in specific disabling conditions.
Program
1. Principles of Clinical Physiology of Exercise.
1.1 The clinical patient in stationary conditions
1.2 The exercise as therapeutic tool
1.3 ECG e graded test for patients in stationary condition
1.4 Energetical systems and metabolism cost at rest and during activity
2. The therapeutic exercise in the following conditions:
2.1 sedentary lifestyle, obesity, diabetes 1 and 2, atherosclerosis, hypertension;
2.2 osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, neuro-muscular injury;
2.3 ageing: sarcopenia, depression;
2.4 cerebral ischemia, heart attack;
2.5 respiratory problems.
For each of these conditions we will be specifically taken into consideration:
- hints about the pathophysiology,
- interactions between exercise and therapeutic treatment to which undergoes the subject (pharmacological, dietary, etc ..)
- neuro-hormonal adaptations to the exercise
- potential physiological adaptations and mechanisms of action activated by exercise, assessments of the contraindications to exercise.
Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)
In accordance to the Descriptors of Dublin, at the end of the course students are expected to fulfill the following requirements:1. to possess good knowledge and comprehension of the various themes of Clinical Physiology of the Exercise, so as to be able to discuss theoretical aspects of the discipline in a logical and complete fashion;2. to be able to discuss applicative problems;3. to be able to critically and autonomously evaluate different opinions related to the various aspects of the course;4. to have reached a good level of learning capacity, not only in terms of ability to memorize/retrieve the information studied, but also in terms of ability to elaborate original thoughts about the diverse issues presented during the course.

- Course books
Ehrman et al. "Clinical Exercise Physiology" (Terza edizione, 2013)
ACSM's Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription (Decima edizione, 2017
- Assessment
Oral examination (in Italian or in English).
The exam consists of at least three / four questions. The candidate must demonstrate knowledge of the topics, the ability to link between different subjects, the ability to communicate using a correct scientific language, according to Dublin descriptors.
- Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)
Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.
To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
