Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

D1- KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING At the end of the course, to pass the exam the student has to demonstrate the acquisition of knowledge related to the causes of human diseases: cell/tissue damage and death; fundamental pathological mechanisms associated to immunity, inflammation and cancerogenesis; genetic pathology inheritance.

D2-APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING The students has to demonstrate the ability to recognize the most common underlying mechanisms of disease.

D3-MAKING JUDGEMENTS The student has to acquire knowledge to enable him to recognize the mechanisms responsible for the development of a disease and to identify specific pathological conditions with the possibility of application in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases.

D4-COMMUNICATION The student must have the ability to interact professionally and competently with doctors and with patients. The student has to acquire the capability to convey knowledge in a clear and understandable way and accessible to unqualified persons.

D5-LIFELONG LEARNING SKILLS The student has to be able to examine and understand scientific texts, so as to use them in everyday contexts for the profession and for research.

Teaching, Attendance, Course Books and Assessment

Teaching

Lectures.

Course books

The topics listed in the syllabus can be studied in the following books:

- Robbins Basic pathology, Kumar V., Abbas A.K., Fausto N., Aster J.C., Masson (Ninth Edition).

- Rubin R., Strayer D.S., Patologia generale (Patologia d'organo e molecolare), PICCIN.
- Majno G., Joris I., Cellule, tessuti e malattia, principi di patologia generale, Casa Editrice Ambrosiana.
- Pontieri G.M., Russo M.A., Frati L. Patologia generale (Tomo I), Piccin Editore.

Assessment

Oral examination preceded by a written test. The written test will consist of a multiple choice test since it intends to assess the basic knowledge about the main mechanisms responsible for the development of diseases.

The oral examination will be conducted by means of a colloquy in which the basic knowledge will be deepened with questions related to at least 3 topics discussed in the course. The purpose of the examination is to verify the acquired knowledge and to evaluate the ability to correlate the various topics discussed in the course, the communication skills and the ability to solve practical problems. Student feedback will also be evaluated on the basis of the ability to use proper and appropriate scientific terminology.

Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)

Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.

To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
