Learning Objectives
The learning objectives for students attending the course are: to comprehed the physico-chemical characteristics of pigments used in ancient times up to nowadays; to understand the physico-chemical characteristics of materials used in restoration; to understand the mechanisms of air pollution damage to the cultural heritage.
Program
Module I: Colour
Chemistry and art; Colour chemistry; colour technology from ancient to contemporary art; natural and synthetic pigments
Module II: Products in restoration techniques
Physico-chemical characteristics on the main products used for restoration: Solvents (organic and inorganic); Thickening agents; Strengthening agents; Surfactants; Protective agents
Module III: Chemical interactions with the environment
Origin and fate of Pollutants; Chemical degradations, Monitoring atmospheric pollutants

Students should be able to understand physico-chemical properties of natural and synthetic pigments. Students should be able to understand physico-chemical properties of products used in restoration. Students should be able to understand mechanisms of air pollution damage.

Oral examination
