Learning Objectives
Understanding of the geochemical processes and geochemical cycles of the elements of our planet during its evolution. Introduction to thermodynamic geochemistry for the definition of the geochemical reactions in the water-rock-gas interactions. Classification of the natural waters and their geochemical characterization for the definition of the origin of the solutes. Knowledge of the problematic related to the application of the geochemical and isotopic techniques. Main sampling and analytical methods for the chemical analyses of water.
Program
Geochemistry in the Earth Sciences. The origin of the elements: nucleosynthesis processes in the star systems. Formation of the solar system.Meteorites. The abundance of elements in the Earth System. Composition and distribution of elements in the Earth. Periodic properties of elements and how they influence their geochemical behavior. The rules of Goldschmidt and classification of the elements. The geochemical spheres and the geochemical cycles. Stable isotopes and radioactive isotopes. The radioactive decay. The chemical alteration and equilibria in acqueous solutions. Water-rock interaction processes. The ionic potential. Evaporitic rocks. Classification of waters. The atmosphere and the hydrosphere. The water cycle and the use of oxygen and hydrogen isotopes.
