Learning Objectives
The course aimes at giving the students the basic theoretical knowledge and pratical skills that will enable them to analyse the conservation's state and the decay's cause of the ground and paint layers on a wooden work of art. Even more, students will be able to know materials and manage traditional and modern methods used for layers adhesion and consolidation processes.
Program
1.01 - GROUND LAYERS (4 hrs)
Components: charges and binders
Decay causes:
- phisical decay
- chemical decay
- microbiological decay
- human behavior decay
1.02 - PAINT LAYERS (6 hrs)
- Components: pigments and binders
- Decay causes/ mechanisms:
- phisical decay
- chemical decay
- microbiological decay
- human behavior decay
1.03- CONSOLIDANTS AND ADHESIVES (25hrs)
- The use of consolidants
- Consolidants features and choice of the most appropriate
- Consolidant's properties after their application
- The use of adhesives
- Consolidants features and choice of the most appropriate
- Natural and synthetic resins
- Glues
2-Pratical segment: laboratory activities
Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)
LEARNING RESULTS:
Knowledge and understanding.
At the end of the module the student must have acquired all those theoretical knowledge essential to:
1. recognition of the causes of degradation of the preparatory and pictorial layers of sculptures, wooden furnishings and paintings on the table;
2. recognition of the state of conservation of preparatory and pictorial states .;
3. Identification and selection of adhesives and consolidators suitable for the requirements of the product.
Applied knowledge and understanding.
At the end of the Module, the student must demonstrate that he / she is able to:
- identify the causes of degradation of the wooden artifact;
- identify the methodology and the materials to be used for intervention on the pictorial layers
Making judgments.
At the end of the module, Student will have acquired:
- ability to use appropriate research methods to address the issues to be addressed;
- ability to evaluate different job hypotheses to address different cases of intervention.
Communicative (communication skills). At the end of the module, the student must be able to formulate and argue for a conservative intervention project on the preparatory and pictorial layers of the wooden product.
Learning skills. At the end of the first year lab the student must be able to find and organize independently all the scientific and bibliographical information on the materials and techniques of a wooden artifact. It will also have to know how to organize this information for the drafting of the conservative intervention project.

2. Examination in written form consisting of:
to. Structured tests: 5 questions closed
b. Unstructured trials: 3 open question, with subsequent oral examination
The exam will be evaluated based on the following parameters:
1. Laboratory activity 50%,
which comprises:

- Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)
Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.
To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
