Learning Objectives
The course aims to introduce students to an awareness of the main methodologies of art-history research and the most significant stages in the critical debate, both Italian and European, in different historical periods, and it will also contribute to forming a method of analysis and interpretation of works of art and the acquisition of the linguistic and philological tools that are essential for understanding them.
Program
The main theoretical and methodological approaches to history of art will be presented, through commenting on images and texts; notions regarding the specific nature of various figurative languages and artistic techniques will be addressed, as well as concepts of periodization, style, iconography and iconology and the dynamics that have governed relations between artists and patrons at different times and in different contexts. Some lessons will be devoted to exercises in reading and recognizing works.
Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)
In the final oral examination students will have to show that they have learnt the methodological pre-requisites for the discipline, demonstrating that they know how to apply them independently and are able to analyze critically the texts presented in the lessons. They must also know how to apply the concepts learnt, recognizing and analyzing the works presented during the course of lessons, with an appropriate use of critical language.

“Satisfactory” assessments will be given for the following: achievement of a minimal stock of knowledge on the themes dealt with by the student, even when there are some training gaps; non-appropriate use of language
“Negative” assessments will be given for the following: difficulty in orientation by the student when faced with the themes addressed in the texts under examination: training gaps; non-appropriate use of language.
