Learning Objectives

Training objectives

The course aims to provide the theoretical and conceptual framework as well as the necessary methodologies spatial interpretation of socio - economic phenomena.

Program

Interpretation and analysis of the territory. Reading social and geopolitical phenomena. Demographic and social mobility facilities. The city in its regional relations. Town and country. New cities and rural areas.

Framework of the human geography addresses : concepts , issues , problems , methods , tools. Development of social geography. Brief tour of the origins and study guidelines. The discipline theoretical references. Research topics of social geography in European schools ( French , German , English). Contribution to the debate of the Italian geographers . Methods and tools.

The image in geography and its cartographic representation : the map as a planning tool of terrestrial space . geo - quantitative information , geo - qualitative . The GIS and their use.

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

In relation to Social Geography students must show possession :

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:

-Awareness of the main phases of the epistemological debate with particular reference to problems and methods of social geography;

-knowledge of relationships with other social sciences;

-adequate knowledge and effective understand of perspectives and space analysis tools as a social product;

-understand concepts of efficiency, integrity and social equity (sustainable development);

-knowledge and understand of the cause-effect relationships in the environment-territorial system;

-understand advantage of the different models of intervention on the territory.

APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:

-Knowledge and understand of concepts and theories presented in the course;

-ability to analyze the geographic survey tools for understand the interventions on the territory

-apply acquired knowledge and understand issues related to the interrelations between territorial and social dynamics;

-combine social geography concepts and tools to sketch a territorial analysis.

MAKING KUDGEMENTS:

-Capacity to interpret the often hidden reasons and mechanisms of the system and the relationship between man and environment;

-ability to identify appropriate methodologies for different socio-territorial contexts

-identifying and interpreting the relationships between space, place, identity and culture;

-ability to design, within research or simulation, hypothesis of analysis and intervention of territorial planning policies;

-analysis and criticism of spatial planning interventions;

-recognize and interpret the processes and social contexts in which the territorial dimension plays a significant role.

COMMUNICATION  SKILLS:

Ability to communicate clearly, with arguing consistency and with appropriate disciplinary language specific knowledge.

LEARNING SKILLS:

-Capacity to locate the sources of research resources independently;

-capacity of critical reading of phenomena and geographic-social facts;

-ability to study, analysis and evaluation of socio-spatial structures and functions
