Learning Objectives

The aim of the course is to provide a basic understanding of principles, instrumentation and applications of chemical analysis.


Data handling and spreadsheets. Accuracy and Precision, determinate errors, indeterminate errors. Ways of expressing accuracy and precision.

General concepts of chemical equilibrium in water solutions. Activity and activity coefficients. Thermodynamic equilibrium constant and activity coefficients, the diverse ion effect. Acid-base theories, acid-base equilibria in water, the pH scale. Weak acids and bases. Buffers. Precipitation equilibria, the solubility product. The diverse species in solution on solubility. Complexes and formation constants Chelating agents and chelates. Redox equilibria. Electrochemical cells. Nernst equation. Electrode potential

Systematic approach to equilibrium. Mass balance equations, charge balance equations.

Acid-base titrations. Precipitation titrations. Complexometric titrations. Redox titrations.

Molecular UV-Vis, IR spectroscopy: general principles. Lambert-Beer low and deviations from. Light sources. Monochromators. Detectors. Single and double bean spectrophotometers. Qualitative and quantitative analysis.

Atomic spectrometric methods.

Solvent extraction, distribution coefficient, distribution ratio, percent extracted.

Chromatography, principles of chromatographic separations. Classifications of chromatographic techniques. Theory of column efficiency in chromatography, selectivity.

Gas chromatography. Performing GC separations. GC columns, GC detectors, Stationary and mobile phases. Temperature selection. Quantitative measurements.

Liquid chromatography. High Performance Liquid chromatography. Size exclusion chromatography, Ion exchange chromatography. Stationary and mobile phases. Normal and reversed phases. Isocratic and concentration gradients separation. Detectors. Thin-Layer chromatography.

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

The student must show mastery of basic knowledge related to the equilibrium in aqueous solution and apply to all analytical techniques that rely on them as the gravimetric and volumetric analysis. It must also have the fundamental knowledge for understanding the most common instrumental analytical techniques (chromatography, spectroscopy).

- The student will have to show an understanding of the concepts and theories provided by the course; It must be able to propose the most suitable methods such or quantitative analysis of different types of samples .

- The student will demonstrate the ability to use knowledge and concepts that allow to reason according to the specific logic of the discipline. Must be able, in particular, to apply the theoretical knowledge acquired in specific laboratory practices.

-The student will have to show a 'proper skills to effectively communicate the knowledge acquired.
