Learning Objectives

Theorical and methodological bases to operate in an Analytical Chemical Laboratory: Safety, Instruments, solutions preparation, solubility, analytical quantitative determination of pharmaceutical substances, some basic informations on the qualitative inorganic identification of pharmaceutical substances.

Program

Introduction and essential concepts (Chemical Analysis, Errors, Concentrations, Main instruments of the Lab)

Safety in the Lab

Acid-Base Equilibirium in solution, pH, pH measurement

Solubility

Quantitative Analysis

pH Calculation in aqueous solutions (Buffer Solutions and Acid-Base Titration Curves)

Basic informations on the qualitative analysis of inorganic substasnces

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

Understanding of safety standards, instrumentation, equilibrium in solution and learning of quantitative analytical techniques in chemistry, ability to understand the most recent instrumental techniques

Demonstration of the ability to choose and apply the most appropriate quantitative analytical techniques for the determination of compounds belonging to the Official Pharmacopoeia, effect of changes to the various equilibria in solution to obtain a determined result (pH value, concentration, precipitation).

Acquisition of the judgment skills to undertake substance analyzes independently and efficiently.

Development of communication skills suitable for the presentation of the data collected during the analyzes, the calculations and the presentation of the final result using the appropriate specific terminology. Ability to report their results in an analytical and synthetic way.

Development of good autonomy for carrying out quantitative analyzes of pharmaceutical substances described in the official pharmacopoeia and have the ability to search for alternative methods in the literature and with online tools for continuous and constant training.

Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)

Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.

To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
