Learning Objectives

Acquisition of fundamental and advanced notions about Dante's corpus. Acquisition of stylistic and rhetorical tools useful for the correct reading of medieval poetry. Systematic reading of the Comedy, from a textual and historical-critical point of view. The methodological tools suitable for the correct historical and chronological contextualization of Dante's masterpiece will also be provided.

Program

Reading, paraphrasing, thematic, stylistic, metric and rhetorical analysis of Purgatory. The canticle will be analyzed in the particular key of the author's political thought, which extends to complex and problematic elements with respect to the Florentine "municipal" vision of Hell, towards the formulation of the need for a universal order guaranteed by the Empire. Repeated comparisons are made with other cantos and with other Dante texts.
