Learning Objectives
To transmit information useful to independently deal with the cytometric approach to the diagnosis of the most frequent haematological and non haematological diseases that can be routinely encountered in the Clinical Pathology laboratory
Program
Development of the following topicts through direct computer emulation
Overview of cytometric data analysis
The "Lymphocyte typing" exam; execution, appropriateness, and meaning
Reactive lymphocytosis and neoplastic lymphocytosis
Notes on the diagnosis of acute leukemia
Role of the cytometry laboratory in the autologous bone marrow transplantation
The basophilic degranulation test, and its role in allergy diagnostics
Cytometric analysis of broncho-alveolar lavage fluid
Cytometric diagnosis of paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria
Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)
Knowledge and understanding. The student should demonstrate knowledge of the topics listed in the program and be able to understand the relationships between the various information related to them.
Applied knowledge and understanding. The student should prove to be able to interpret the data in his/her possession in order to understand the diagnostic problem.
Autonomy of judgment. The student should prove to be able to process the data to get autonomously a reasoned solution to the diagnostic problem
Communication skills. The student should prove to be able to communicate clearly and consequentially the diagnostic process followed, and the relevance of the final result.
Ability to learn. The student should prove to be able to coordinate the information progressively received during the course, using them logically in a global approach.

Teaching, Attendance, Course Books and Assessment
- Teaching
Lectures and practical computer exercises with simulated diagnosis of typical cases.
- Attendance
Mandatory attendance
- Course books
The Course Book consists of the material provided by the teacher and accessible in Moodle. This material consists of the book "Notes of Diagnostic Cytometry" and of the slides projected in class.
As a reference material, and only for the topics discussed in class, we propose the text "Cytometric Diagnosis of Hematologic Neoplasms", Ortolani, Editrice Quattroventi, also uploaded in Moodle.
Still only for topics discussed in class, another consultation text is "Cellular Diagnostics: Basic Principles, Methods and Clinical Applications of Flow Cytometry", Sack, Tarnok, Rothe eds, Karger 2009. In case of problems in the text availability, please contact the teacher.
- Assessment
Final examination consisting of the computer analysis of a typical case. The evaluation of the candidate will be expressed as suitable or not suitable.
- Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)
Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.
To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
