Learning Objectives
The course aims to provide, through paleographic, codicological, historical knowledge, the means of identification, dating, possible localization, reading of the most important book writings from the first century a.C. until printing.
Program
Study of writing related to the knowledge of materials, tools, techniques and methods of execution. Survey on the birth of the different graphic forms, on their development and decay, on the degree of reception among the public, with particular attention to the writings of Roma. The development of the writing from the early Middle Ages to the introduction of the press will also be analyzed in detail. We will try to outline a historical profile of Latin writing from the V century a.C. to the VI d.C., then from the graphic particularism ('national' writings) to the reconstitution of the writing’s unity (gothic humanistic carolina), up to the introduction of the press, with reading exercises, palaeographic analysis, possible codicological description, conducted on material provided during the course.
Bridging Courses
The knowledge of Latin and of Roman and medieval history would certainly be useful.
