Learning Objectives

The course aims to introduce students to the analysis of a well-defined historical moment and to start them to the concrete application of the concepts and procedures of historical research through the guided or individual discussion of documents and historiographical issues relevant. The knowledge of historiographical theories and documentary research techniques are essential training elements for the exercise of teacher professionalism and the construction of laboratories together with students.

Program

The first unitary fifteen years, known as the age of the historical Right, placed the ruling class of the new state a series of tests of great magnitude. The first, of course, was to "invent" a state to complete and complete the revolutionary transition that in the years 1859-1861 had led to Unity. If the antiquity of the Italian nation was an acquired fact, the idea that it was represented by a unitary container and capable of embodying it after a story founded on fragmentation was a great challenge. The course will focus on five major issues:

1) Inventing a State: proclaimed Victor Emmanuel II King of Italy, it was necessary to face the difficult challenge of building a State that included different political traditions and largely little or no practical constitutional arrangements.

2) The Italians: a nation to be consolidated. Who were the citizens of the new state? How did the ruling class largely composed of personalities who had taken part directly in the transition 1859-1861 perceive them? What could be done to strengthen the national bond to which the founding factor of Unity was called?

3) Italy and Europe: the new State aspired to be one of the great powers of Europe and thus to get rid of the heavy protection of Bonapartist France. This was one of the factors that, along with the desire for the completion of national unity, prompted the right to accept the alliance with Prussia to wage war on Austria in 1866.

4) Centre and periphery: the administrative structure to be given to the nascent state was one of the first nodes that the ruling class was called to dissolve. The centralist choice was taken with the conviction that it was a temporary passage aimed at harmonizing a precarious organism in order to stabilize it.

5) Southern Italy: the integration of the former Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, that is to say the larger pre-unification state, represented the most difficult test for the new Kingdom and for the ruling class that led it. It was a confrontation that generated a war, known as brigandage, complex and traversed by various fractures.
