The main goal of the course is practising students’ reading and speaking skills so that they can easily understand a text and take part in a conversation about everyday life topics. Furthermore, the course aims at providing students with the grammar points and common vocabulary (intermediate level)  listed below (see “program”).

Particularly, the course is based on:

- the study of some vocabulary (intermediate level) through reading activities;

- the study of the grammar topics listed below;

- activities to improve students’ speaking skills.

The course is principally focused on reading and speaking activities on general topics so that students can practise to have a good command of the language.

The course provides students with a short overview of the following grammar topics, in particular: 

- present simple and continuous;

- gerunds and infinitives;

- future forms - will/won't, be going to, present simple, present continuous;

- present perfect simple and past simple;

- first conditional and future time clauses;

- second conditional;

- past continuous and past perfect;

- past and present habits and states;

- modal verbs;

- comparative and superlative adjectives and adverbs;

- articles (indefinite, definite, no article);

- quantifiers;

- the passive form;

Knowledge and understanding:

At the end of the course, students should demonstrate a certain level of knowledge of the grammar topics and vocabulary above-mentioned (intermediate level). Consequently, they should be confident enough to understand the key points of a text/conversation about general topics.

Applying knowledge and understanding:

At the end of the course, students should be able to:

- demonstrate a reasonable level of knowledge of the grammar topics and vocabulary studied during the course so that the interaction with other speakers becomes quite possible and meaningful;

- understand the key points of a text about general topics;

- ask and answer questions about general topics.

Making judgements:

 At the end of the course, students should be able to:

-  express their preferences for/opinions about general topics;

- develop a certain level of awareness of their language mistakes so that they can correct them.

Communication skills:

 At the end of the course, students should be able to:

- develop a reasonable level of fluency so that the interaction with other speakers becomes quite possible and meaningful;

- take part in a discussion based on the topics of a reading activity.

Learning skills:

Students should have a reasonable level of knowledge of the grammar topics and vocabulary studied during the course in order to become independent enough to deepen their understanding of those topics.

Attendance

The course does not involve compulsory attendance. However, in order to reach good results as far as command of the language is concerned regular attendance of the lessons is highly recommended.

Assessment

The final oral examination will consist of a reading and grammar test.  

This is a pass/fail exam. Students will pass the exam if they demonstrate to have at least a sufficient level of knowledge and understanding of the grammar topics and vocabulary studied.

Students will show their reading skills and their knowledge of grammar topics.

Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)

Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.

To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
