Learning Objectives

The course aims to provide students with an in-depth knowledge of the transformations of artistic practices between the second half of the nineteenth century and the 1980s. The course includes the acquisition of specialized vocabulary and historical and philological skills aimed at contextualizing the transformations of artistic techniques, materials and processes in the context of contemporary social and cultural dynamics. Particular attention will be paid to the technical-scientific evolutions and developments of the consumer society that have allowed rapid evolutions in artistic practice.

Program

The course unfolds through a series of case studies relating to individual works divided into four periods distributed as follows:

- Second half of the nineteenth century (changes in painting between theories of color and developments in science, industry and technology): 4 lessons

- Avant-garde (artistic photography, collage, film and photo-collage, ready-made, objet trouvé) 5 lessons

- Return to order (resumption of traditional techniques) 3 lessons

- From the second post-war period to the New Media (new materials, assembly, happening, performance, installation, environment and video) 6 lessons

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

Students will have to acquire mature critical-analytical skills in the recognition of the works examined in class or present in the manuals. They will have to demonstrate the ability to distinguish the different artistic techniques and describe their material as well as stylistic characteristics with the use of specific terminology. They will have to contextualize the different artistic practices within the context of contemporary social and cultural dynamics and demonstrate maturity of critical re-elaboration and autonomy of investigation.

In order to be considered attending students, students must attend at least two-thirds of the lessons.

Assessment

The final evaluation will be based on the following criteria

a) punctuality and attendance at lessons, class participation: 30% (9/30 of the final grade)

b) assessment through a final exam. Assessment will take place through an oral exam. This exam will consist in the recognition of three artworks among those studied in class or present in the reference manuals (7 + 7 + 7 = 21/30). For each image, starting from the recognition of the author, the title and the year, the student must be able to describe the technique of execution using the specific terminology. The student will then have to broaden the analysis by placing the work in the evolution of the individual artist's oeuvre as well as in its historical context, and then contextualize the various artistic practices in the context of contemporary social and cultural dynamics, demonstrating maturity in critical re-elaboration and appropriate knowledge of the bibliography: 70 % (21/30 of the final grade)
