Learning Objectives
The course aims to illustrate the technical-scientific fundamentals on the characterization, (risk) assessment, and remediation of contaminated sites.
Program
Framing the problem of contaminated sites: laws and regulations, types of sites (potentially and actually contaminated), census (at European, National, and Regional levels).
Fate and transport of contaminants in soil and related environmental media (air, groundwater, surface water, and waste).
Epidemiology and toxicology.
Soil and groundwater quality criteria for contaminated sites: the limit value criterion, the absolute risk assessment, and the comparative (or relative) risk assessment.
Passive contaminant control systems for contaminated sites: surface capping, vertical barriers, and bottom liners.
Active groundwater control systems for contaminated sites.
Remediation technologies for contaminated sites: in situ and ex-situ (on-site, off-site), biological, physico-chemical, and thermal methods.
Case-study 1: Proposal and application of a regional methodology of comparative risk assessment developed with initial attention to the context of potentially contaminated
sites in the Marche Region (Central Italy, Adriatic Sea side).
Case-study 2: Landfill gas emission monitoring with the accumulation chamber method - multiyear study at a sanitary landfill site for non-hazardous waste located in the Marche Region (Central Italy, Adriatic Sea side).
Teaching Material
The teaching material prepared by the lecturer in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the lecturer specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it
