Learning Objectives
The course aims to provide: a) a knowledge base on the theoretical and methodological aspects of research in developmental psychology; b) the fundamental notions relating to the psychological processes and mechanisms that regulate the main areas of individual development along the life span; c) the main risk and protection factors involved in typical and atypical developmental trajectories.
Program
The course includes the in-depth study of the following topics:
A first part includes:
- introduction to developmental psychology
- the social contexts of the individual's development with particular reference to the family and school
- the research methods used within the discipline.
A second part is dedicated to illustrating the main areas of individual development. In this regard, attention will be placed both in reference to trajectories of typical development and of atypical development. In particular, the following areas will be addressed:
- perceptual and motor development
- cognitive development
- language development
- moral and social development.
The third part is aimed at exposing emotional development with particular attention to attachment theory.
The course ends with a brief introduction to the concept of developmental psychopathology

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)
The student must show the acquisition of:
Knowledge and understanding: the mastery of theoretical and methodological knowledge of developmental psychology.
Applying knowledge and understanding: the ability to recognize and understand the typical and atypical development trajectories, detect the main phases of psychological development and the risk and protection factors related to the relational context of an individual over the life span
Making judgments: the ability to use knowledge and concepts to reflect independently on specific topics of the discipline
Communication skills: a technical language, relevant to the subject of study, in order to be able to communicate with specialist and non-specialist interlocutors.
Learning skills: Mastery and autonomy in the choice of material useful for the purposes of their continuing professional training

- Assessment
Written exam consisting of two parts:
- 15 multiple choice closed questions
- 5 open questions
A specific and in-depth knowledge of the topics is required, as well as the use of an appropriate and specialized language. The level of knowledge and depth of the various topics will be assessed, as well as the ability to critically re-elaborate the contents under examination.
- Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)
Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.
To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
